Erie Battalion Update Letter (May 2013)

1)We are moving the June drill to June 29th and 30th due to myself and Ensign Maslar needing to be in DC and Ensign Waters being out of state. We will have the four color guard cadets for the retirement ceremony for Senior Chief however as required on the 1st.

2)We will be training on May 17-19 at Ravenna Training center your cadet should have had a packet with them today with details.

3)Our Keystone Works exercise went really well and the cadets did a great job of building their shelter and the medical exercise. 

4)We need to confirm how many are going to the Medal of Honor convention on Sept 18-22 in Gettysburg, Pa. Room cost will be about 130-150 dollars for the dates, meals will be paid for by each cadet so they will need money to eat. We have arranged for at least 20 tickets for the autograph time and we have spots for the discussion sessions and the concert but need final count soon especially to reserve rooms. Please contact the LPO ASAP so that information can be sent to me ASAP.

5)We will be off base in July at Keystone Works again details will be sent out as finalized.

6)Our tag gun STEM program is nearing being ready to begin with prototypes being tested and we hope to be ready for winter training to keep the cadets busy.

7)Our sea perch STEM is ready to roll and we have kits ready for the cadets to build but are waiting for the winter months again.

8)The drone program is nearing final draft for presentation so that we can get the FAA trainings setup and then buy the drone.

9)We will be sponsoring in conjunction with Pittsburgh a Ham Radio license course that will be open to all cadets and staff. This will be at limited cost and include the license exam fee as well and will count as TWT time also.

10)We will be sponsoring in conjunction with Pittsburgh a Wilderness First Aid course that is 20 hours long and the certification is good for three years. Dates are in process.

11)We will be sponsoring in conjunction with Pittsburgh a SAR Tech III class and certification test which is a total of ten hours. This is a national search and rescue certification. Dates are in process.

12)We have partnered with John Wiley publishing and are working with them to sponsor ASVAB training preparation seminars all materials and website access will be included for one price.  Dates will be setup in the next few months. This will be open to all cadets of age and the general public.

13)We have partnered with the Congressional Medal of Honor group to sponsor a leadership program that they have developed and are offering in schools and to youth groups. We plan to start this program in winter also.

14)We have partnered with the center for American Values to start development of a youth designed leadership course that we are planning to have ready for a 2014 release. They also donated to the unit a copy of Medal of Honor Quotes book that we will get autographed during the convention for the unit.

15)We have partnered with G&W Publishing and will be bring the cadets the “Exploring Smart Money” course in the winter months.

16)We will be starting to teach the Patriots awards courses to the cadets come winter so they can earn medals and certificates. 

17)We will be scheduling NRA pistol and rifle trainings in the fall and it will be open to cadets, parents, siblings and any others.

18)LAST NOTE:  WE NEED TO DO SOME FUND RAISING SO THAT THE UNIT CAN GET BADLY NEEDED ITEMS LIKE UNIFORM PATCHES AND RIBBONS ETC. WE HAVE A VERY VERY TIGHT BUDGET AS WE HAVE NO INCOME SOURCE OTHER THAN DONATIONS. ANY AND ALL IDEAS ARE WELCOME.
